The report prepared by the 9-member “Anti-Muslim Independent Expert Group” appointed by the former Minister of Interior Horst Seehofer provides striking information on anti-Muslim hostility in Germany. The group studied anti-Muslim hatred, drawing on sources such as scientific research, police crime statistics, anti-discrimination agencies and documents from non-governmental organisations. In the report, it is emphasized that hostility towards Muslims is widespread in a large part of the society and has been on an increasing trend for years.
The report states that one out of every two people in Germany approves of anti-Muslim statements. Muslims are perceived both as “foreign” immigrants and as members of a backward religion. These perceptions negatively affect Muslims and cause them to face intense social discrimination. The report draws attention to the fact that women wearing headscarves are the target of hostility towards Muslims.
In the field of education, it is stated that Muslim students and teachers experience Muslim hostility. Muslim students’ performances are shown badly and racist thoughts are spread through educational tools.
The report proposes various measures to combat anti-Muslim hatred and demands that the government appoint an “anti-Muslim officer”. It is warned that the media treats Muslims negatively and that this situation encourages far-right violence.
It is stated that the announcement of the report draws attention to the problems in the society and will be taken seriously. The report, which will be discussed together with Muslim associations at the German Islamic Conference, is considered an important step in the fight against anti-Muslim hatred.
